GOMBE STREAM NATIONAL PARK

Gombe Stream National Park is well known as the protected home for a group of Chimpanzees made famous by Jane Goodall.

I was inspired to make a map that highlighted both the hillshade and the land use of an area to better provide a context of the land and to provide a fresh cartographic view of the area. This map teases out the relief of the area using hillshade and slope techniques along with imagery that highlights grasslands and forested areas. I further enhanced the map highlighting where land cover has changed to forest or range land based on Sentinel 2 land cover data.

What was most interesting to me was that most of the park is mostly on the Western facing slopes of the mountains that run generally North to South. This means that most of the chimpanzee habitat does not cover the whole mountain, but only half. This raises questions about the complete habitat of the chimpanzee population.
